Along South Africa’s legendary Garden Route lies a stretch of coast where nature sets the pace and the soul has space to wander. The Sedgefield–Wilderness Camino invites you to slow down and walk through one of the country’s most treasured landscapes — a place where forests meet wetlands, mountains roll gently inland, and the ocean is never far from view.
This Camino unfolds within the heart of the Garden Route National Park, a 300-kilometre coastal corridor celebrated for its indigenous forests, pristine lakes, rich birdlife, and extraordinary biodiversity. Here, walking becomes more than movement — it becomes a way of reconnecting with nature, with others, and with yourself. And what’s even better, when a crew handles the logistics, leaving you free to focus on your hike and nature!
Sedgefield proudly carries the title of Africa’s first Citta slow town, embracing a philosophy of unhurried living, sustainability, and community. Known for the iconic Wild Oats Community Farmers Market, the town is surrounded by natural wonders — the Swartvlei Lagoon, Rondevlei and Langvlei wetlands, Myoli and Cola beaches, and soaring paragliding launch sites. Walking here feels intentional, gentle, and grounded.
Inland, the Camino passes through Hoogekraal and Ruigtevlei, where farmland, forests, and mountain backdrops reveal a quieter, rural character of the region. These landscapes speak of stewardship, simplicity, and connection to the land — a vital counterpoint to the coastal path and a reminder of the region’s agricultural and ecological roots.
Often described as an endless paradise, Wilderness is defined by wide, untouched beaches, the winding Serpentine river system, and a relaxed village atmosphere. Framed by forested hills and protected parkland, it offers year-round appeal and easy access via the historic Kaaimans River Pass. It is a place where rivers, lakes, and ocean exist in perfect harmony — and where your Camino naturally passes through before ending back in Sedgefield.
This is a route designed for eco-tourists, families, retirees, hikers, and adventure seekers alike. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, with internationally significant Ramsar wetland sites at Rondevlei and Langvlei, and a haven for those drawn to walking, reflection, and outdoor discovery.
The Sedgefield–Wilderness Camino is not about distance or speed. It is about presence. It is about walking lightly through a landscape that invites care, curiosity, and wonder.
Come walk where nature leads — and let the Garden Route work its quiet magic.
Arrive in Sedgefield and settle into your guesthouse, “10 on Sysie” in Sedgefield. In the late afternoon, we gather for a warm meet-and-greet, where you’ll be introduced to the Camino journey ahead. You’ll receive your personal journal and a gentle briefing to set the tone for the days to come. Supper is shared together, with accommodation arranged for the group — a relaxed beginning to an intentional walk.
Begin your journey by walking through our quaint coastal town, where colourful mosaics appear in unexpected places, telling quiet stories along the way. The lagoon lies calm and reflective, boats resting idly along its banks, inviting you to slow your pace and take it all in.
As you leave the village behind, notice the sense of space and stillness that surrounds you. Cross the national road and continue towards Outward Bound, where the landscape gradually begins to rise. The climb to Cloud Nine is rewarding.
At the summit, pause at the paragliding launch site and take in the magnificent panoramic views — ocean, lagoon, forest, and distant mountains stretching out before you. The temptation to linger is strong, but the Camino still calls, with approximately four kilometres remaining as you make your way back into town.
Leaving Sedgefield for Ruigtevlei, the route climbs gently onto Cloud Nine before turning right into the forest. Look back to the left as the town slowly recedes, with the lagoon and ocean unfolding into view below.
The path leads through private forest land before entering the PG Bison plantation. From this elevated vantage point, the scenery opens up dramatically — rolling hills of plantations and indigenous forest stretch into the distance, while to the right, Groenvlei lies calm and reflective at the foot of Blombos Nature Reserve.
These wide open spaces have a way of making you feel small, drawing you closer to creation and its quiet grandeur. The trail towards Eastbrook undulates gently, inviting a steady, unhurried pace. Keep an eye on the sky for birds of prey, often seen gliding silently on the thermals above.
As you walk, breathe in the scent of pine and forest undergrowth. At Nostalgia, a welcoming farmstall along the way, pause for a cup of traditional railway coffee (moer koffee) — brewed on a stove and served with condensed milk — a simple pleasure and a fitting reward before on to your nights lodgings at Eastbrook River Lodge.
Leaving Eastbrook River Lodge, enjoy the picturesque Hoogekraal River as you cross the bridge, its gentle flow setting the tone for the stretch ahead. The road soon begins a long, steady, winding climb, gradually lifting you above the valley. As you near the top, views of the surrounding forests begin to open up, rewarding your effort.
The gravel road ends at a T-Junction where a tarred road leads you along open farmlands towards your next destination, Oakhurst Dairy Farm. Be mindful of traffic along this section and walk facing oncoming vehicles.
Take time to enjoy the expansive farm vistas and the deep sense of peace that settles over the landscape as you approach your resting place for the day.
Leaving Oakhurst Farm, turn left and continue for a few kilometres along the same tarred road. To your right, the Outeniqua Mountains come into view — soft blue silhouettes rising on the horizon, with working dairy farms spread across the fertile foreground.
You’ll pass the entrance to Woodville Nature Reserve, a perfect moment to pause and take in the expansive rural vistas. Shortly thereafter, you reach the turn-off to the historic Seven Passes Road. This gravel road immediately begins a winding descent into the Touw River Pass, where dense indigenous forest creates a cool, shaded corridor. The wooded section is particularly scenic, offering a sense of tranquillity and gentle seclusion.
All too soon, the route brings you to the intersection leading to Wilderness. This gently descending gravel road from Wilderness Heights rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of the Touw River Gorge, the Serpentine River system, and the coastline beyond. Known for its quiet rural character, stud farms, and unhurried pace, Whites Road is a favourite among walkers, cyclists, and those who prefer to travel slowly and soak up the scenery.
Below, the picturesque, leafy village of Wilderness lies nestled between forest and sea — inviting you to descend and discover its unique charm.
The route from Fairy Knowe towards Pinelake is a highly scenic journey through the heart of the Garden Route’s Lakes District. This stretch offers ever-changing views of protected wetlands, indigenous forests, and pastoral farmland, becoming especially picturesque as it weaves between the coastal lake systems.
Passing the Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail, located within the Garden Route National Park, the route crosses a railway bridge over the Touw River. On the opposite bank lies the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp, where trails wind through indigenous forest and follow the river upstream to a hidden waterfall.
A few hundred metres, a gravel road skirts Island Lake. This undulating section passes the Brown-Hooded Kingfisher Trail, offering quiet walking and frequent birdlife sightings.
After crossing the Duiwe River, you will pass Langvlei before reaching the junction that leads past Rondevlei itself. Here, wide open spaces unfold and the landscape seems to breathe — the sense of scale and stillness drawing you fully into the moment.
This road leads you to Rondevlei Nature Reserve, where wetlands, birdlife, and silence define the final approach.
