Camel Rock, Constantia Nek

Camel Rock, Constantia Nek

If you’re looking for a hike to guarantee perfect views, birdlife, fauna and flora, mountain paths, climb, water and open spaces, then this walk is for you.

The walk starts at Contantia Nek. Park your vehicle at the traffic circle. There are usually a few car guards to look after your vehicle. Also, there is usually some activity at the parking, a pop-up coffee stop, etc.

The walk takes about four to six hours depending on your level of fitness. We took munchies with us. We planned to have a coffee break on top of the mountain. So, we packed a flask of coffee/tea and sandwiches each.

Start early to avoid the heat. It’s a smooth steep climb along the ranger’s jeep track to the Ranger’s huts above Table Mountain. (Enquire about these because they are for hire.) Enjoy the climb and views of the vineyards, and as you go higher, enjoy the views of the lakes, dams and sea.

We walked this hike many times in the past. It’s open and safe. You’ll most likely find other hikers, joggers and dog walkers along the way. Families and tourists like this walk.

However, you are on the mountain, so be prepared for sudden change in the weather. Always check beforehand. Check with San Parks for safety requirements if you’re not sure. The path is well marked, so you’re not likely to get lost. This path zigzags steeply.

Hold on to your camera. Just when you think the view below is great, you are rewarded with better views the higher you go. It’s just awesome.

Keep on the gravel track. Higher up it becomes a concrete track, then you know you’re nearing the top.

Many years ago, three dams have been built on top of the mountain to supply water to the surrounding area. The first, De Villiers Dam will be on you left. A walk to and on the wall of the dam is awesome and not for the faint hearted. If you carry on along the road, you’ll come across the other two dams, Alexandra Dam and Victoria Dam.

By now you’re probably drenched in sweat, if it’s a hot day. You probably thinking that’s it, we’ve done enough. But, on our walk today, we wanted to get to Camel Rock also known as Bel Ombre, which is to the left of De Villiers Dam. Follow the path and after a few hundred metres you will come across Camel Rock.

Camel Rock is situated between Constantia Corner and De Villiers Dam. This hike is awesome. You are rewarded with oodles of breathtaking views and adventure.

We chose Camel Rock as our stopping point. Here we enjoyed a well-deserved break and photo opportunities digging, into our back packs for a little bite and great conversation, comparing photographs and discussing the route, comfortable in the knowledge that getting back down to the vehicle, we’ll be going down.

Don’t fool yourself because it’s a long way down and the hike will challenge your calves and thighs as you jolt down. Be kind to your legs. Take it easy, you will get there. Enjoy conversation and the views going down.
