05 Sep Rondevlei Nature Reserve – an unsung hero of nature
Rondevlei, a nature reserve in a suburb. This place in Grassy Park, Cape Town is awesome.
Rondevlei is a protected wetland and lake. There are a number of threatened fynbos species in this reserve. It is a haven for birders. The number of bird hides allows one to view them without disturbing their activity. Rondevlei is home to over 230 bird species, a number of reptiles and mammals. And, they also have hippos. Exciting, but tread carefully.
The walks are clearly laid out, safe and easy. They are not long, so take your time and take your binoculars along.
Lookout points along the way provide for excellent views. You might even spot the hippos from there.
I liked the fact that there is also an education centre on the premises. There are recreational facilities, so pack a snack or lunch. These were well maintained when we were there, having clean rest rooms.
Chartered boat rides can be organised for those who would like to see the diverse wildlife from the water.
We’ll done Cape Nature and RAMSAR Convention. The RAMSAR Convention is a convention on Wetlands for the conservation and sustainable use of these sites.
