After savouring a delightful holiday in Johannesburg, we embarked on our return journey to Cape Town. While the distance might seem daunting, we’ve learned that it’s best not to rush. Rushing not only poses risks but also robs us of the chance to relish the drive, the breathtaking scenery, and the charming spots the road unveils.
Jean and I have made it a tradition to break our journey by spending nights along the way. This approach allows us to fully embrace the serenity of the drive, explore the quaint farmstalls, and discover intriguing places of interest.
Unlike many, we never pre-book our accommodations. This choice liberates us from the constraints of a fixed itinerary, enabling us to truly savour the journey rather than fixate on the destination.
On a weekday morning, we departed from Johannesburg. The open road beckoned, and even though we travelled leisurely, it led us further than we initially planned. As late afternoon painted the sky in Richmond, we decided to make it our overnight stop.
A quick online search led us to book our accommodation, which turned out to be a hidden gem. Pat’s Kitchen, a restaurant recommended by our hosts, Pat and Len, charmed us with its welcoming atmosphere. Engaging conversation with Pat and Len soon unfolded, revealing their inspiring story of relocating from Gauteng to retire in this quaint Karoo town of Richmond. Their dedication to this underprivileged community left us in awe.
A year later, Jean and I found ourselves on the same route, this time from Durban. Reaching out to Pat, we were delighted to hear that they were still in Richmond and had accommodation available at the historic Karoo Manor House.
The Karoo Manor House, an architectural gem from the mid-1800s, showcased its heritage charm in the old Cape Dutch style. Our stay there was a warm and inviting experience.
Upon our arrival, Pat greeted us with her usual warmth, making us feel right at home. After checking in, we headed straight to “Pat’s Kitchen,” where we indulged in a delectable Karoo lamb dinner. Dining on anything else would have felt like a missed opportunity.
The evening flew by in delightful conversation, and before we knew it, Jean and I were retiring to a cozy bed for the night. As dawn broke, we set off for Cape Town, with a promise to return and visit our old friends the next time we passed through.
